N4PIX (Tim)

Current Status: To our friends on the East coast: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ (...more)

Location: Naples, FL

About:

My shack is a FT-897D and an attic full of dipoles (That’s condo living for ya). Still, it works pretty well.

My Econoline has a TM-D710 for APRS and part-time IC-2200H with D-Star. The local EOC sprung for a D-star repeater but hasn’t had it operational for over a year now and its not looking like it will ever be installed. Your tax dollars at work…

I also monitor 14.347 and 50.125 usb from time to time throughout the day.

LOL! Not as bad as it sounds. Just a nickname given for replacing the insides of a physically damaged (or beyond repair) HT. You just burn in the s/n of the damaged radio into the new “soul replacement” unit and the HT lives again.

Enjoyed your photos, thank you for sharing them. Definitely one of the things on my list for 2010, is to get active again with my photography hobby and wanting to one day get into Astrophotography. Got bitten by that bug when I got to see Saturn through a telescope for the first time many years ago but had no way to photograph it. Received your APRS message and Yes, I will keep the group updated on the APRS Blackberry saga. Have a good day and rest of the weekend.

I use bbscanner at www.bbscanner.com which uses feeds from radioreference.com or you can create custome feeds. Then I listen to the D-Star refelector feed from Broward County, FL

I read the manual for the D710 ,it doesnt appear to support SSTV like my D700 does but you may find something different.I was half asleep when I read it.now you might be able to receive SSTV .I have copied SSTV in the past when ISS was transmitting it last year during the 25th anniversary by Richard Garriott W5KWQ

It’s not my fault hurricane season was slow to get started this year! Who knows… maybe it will still stay quiet for Florida this year with only a few window-washers…

Thanks Tim! I like to share my installs because I like learning about other people’s installs to see how they’ve done it.

Hi Tim,

I hope to give the 73s APRS gateway a good kick in the shorts this weekend. The last time, it had something to do with the system clock. I hope it’s that simple again.

73s,
Chris

Your settings with my callsign look correct. If you use the ke7jfh in the URL, I think that you need to specify it as “/ke7jfhb”.

You also need to be registered in the gateway probably through kj4acn’s website. You need to have an entry for n4pix in the system with your own IP address assigned to you.

Hope this helps…

Dude – I worked late tonight 8:30 and didn’t turn on my radio until midnight your time. Let’s try D-Star again tomorrow!

Sounds like a plan for D-Star tonight. I probably won’t be online until 7PM PT and I’ll be on the KE7JFH port B repeater.

I am so interested in this that I stayed up and read it anyways! - Still doesn’t really answer the question about if it is legal or not….the link about the pagers – takes me to DL3SDW’s web page – He I believe is in the UK some place – and from what I read it is legal over seas for pagers, there is an amateur in Astraial that is modifying and trying to sell them on ebay – Our laws seem to be written so that it is unclear if pagers on amateur bands are legal or not…..BUT it is interesting, DL3SDW looks like he has some of the same ideas about what information can be sent to a pager and how helpful that information is. – NOW I really am going to sleep – I am going to try to see if I can find DL3SDW’s email address and ask get a little more info – the website looks like the project stopped in 2001. – But thanks for the lead – I am glad to see I am not the only one that thinks like I think :) Have a great night, 73s

Tim,
Thanks for the website, I will take my time and read up on it – looks like I am not the only one with a similar idea – only it looks like they want it to be part of aprs, where I was thinking of a more independent setup, but based on the aprs/packet model of nodes and hubs. I will read it a little more in detail in the morning. Thanks again! – LeRoy, KD8BXP

Hi Tim,

Yes, I think that the D-Star DD (digital data mode) behaves like Ethernet (First come first serve). Too many people surfing the net at the same time would bring everyone’s page speeds way down. Maybe it’s a good thing that these ID-1 radios cost $1,000.

Yes, Skype released an iPhone/iPod Touch application several months ago that allows you to place and receive VoIP calls over wifi on Apple devices. Sweet! I have a 1st generation iPod without a mic or speakers (no joy). My wife has the 2nd gen but it has a pink case to keep me from borrowing it – hihi

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the feedback on HB32! Simple data apps such as chat can be used over voice repeaters without affecting voice QSOs. The Internet usage requires 1.2 Ghz and a separate data repeater interface.

D-Star is amazing!
