Since there are only five of here at the time, I figured I’d start out by saying hi. I am Mike, KD6FTR, and my Geocaching.com username is Ham Hunter. I usually carry my Yaesu VX5-R with me while caching. If not, then I have my Kenwood TM-942a with 2m/220/440 band in it.

Although my Geocaching.com profile is a couple of years old I’ve only really been active in the hunt for about a year now. I use my iPhone with the geocaching app from Groundspeak. Talk about making life easy!

Now it’s your turn. Introduce yourselves and tell us a little about yourself.

    Hello everybody,
my name is Ernst, QTH near Bern / Switzerland (see HB9PVI-5 on APRS for home QTH). I have been hunting caches for maybe 2 years, but only occasionally. Recently my activity has increased because of the iPhone and the great piece of caching software for it. Username is WoIstEs (translates from German to "Where Is It").

Good luck while hunting for treasures and best 73s

    Ernst

Benny, here. I’ve been geocaching for about three years using a Magellan Explorist 500. I also carry my trusty VX-6R. I have a particular fondness for caches that are only accessible by water. Gives me a chance to get the kayak out.

    Hi all,

I created the group Geocaching and I suppose I should post a message. I’ve only been caching for about 3 weeks now, but have been hearing about it for a few years. I think even more so in the almost 2 years that I’ve been an active licensed ham. My username on geocaching.com is kd0bik.

Like I said, I’ve only been caching for about 3 weeks. My stats to date are 11 finds, 3 caches hidden (these were adopted) and 1 Did Not Find. The DNF I believe is simply because the cache isn’t there. The past 2-3 attempts by other cachers have also been DNF.

I went out just this past Friday, 10 April 2009 and found 7 of 7 cache attempts. I’ve mainly been targeting a 1-2 mile radius of my QTH. I think there’s still plenty of caches inside this area to keep me busy for a long time. Looking up to 5 miles….I think it will take me the rest of the year to get to all of them. Colorado appears to be a very active geocaching area.

I haven’t combined geocaching and ham radio just yet. I have a VX-6 and an iCOM 92AD which would both be well suited for the work. I also actively run APRS in the truck when I’m out and about, but again not combined it with geocaching. My APRS setup is an OpenTracker 1+ along with a button style GPS which I operate through my VX-6. I also have the 92AD configured for D-PRS/APRS so that also is an option.

I know there are a number of hams in my area who also geocache. I’ve thought of creating a ham-only type cache…I’m sort of brainstorming with the idea of connecting to a packet station in order to obtain the coordinates/clues. The cache would include ham radio related items such as pins and such that would only be of interest to fellow hams.

Well…I think I’ve typed enough for now. Look forward to reading everyones comments.

    73,
    Jerry

Hello All – Tom KE7VMG-QTH Lake Havasu Arizona. Both my wife Linda KE7VMF and I have been active cacher since 2003. As of this morning, we have over 94 finds. That may sound like a lot, but it really isn’t when you live in a state where some cachers have over 5000 finds. We each use different GPS units, I use a Garmin MAP60CSx and Linda uses her new Garmin Oregon 300. Since were pretty new to Amateur radio, we do use our VX7R unit when were out. They are a great way to stay in touch when your out in the Arizona desert. Our geocaching handle is zoonslikezoey. You can check out our profile on geocaching.com. And, if you have any questions regarding geocaching, you can leave me a message here or at KE7VMG@frontiernet.net.

    Keep on caching.

    -Tom

Let me correct something from the previous message.

We have over 946 finds, not 94. Sorry, big fingers, little keys.

Matt here. KI6LTS and geocaching.com username is majahack. Been lightly geocaching for a couple of years and new to HAM. I use applications on my Palm Treo to make life easier but sometimes resort to printing out the cache pages when I take my daughter with me. Not sure exactly how I will incorporate the two hobbies but am totally open to it.
