Current Status: Anyone know of a cool #hamr website/online tool/social network I could talk about in my @DMRAA club presentation later this month? #hamradio (...more)

Location: Ankeny, Iowa

About:

I was interested in scanning since I was a little kid, with my father working for the Des Moines Fire Department through my high school career. Got my radio license in October 2008 at Iowa State University. Later joined the Des Moines Radio Amateurs Association (http://www.dmraa.com) and in May 2009 I was elected as Vice President of the DMRAA. I am very active in VHF/UHF digital modes such as D-STAR and APRS. The DMRAA was the first organization to establish a D-STAR system in Iowa (KD0IAN B/C/AD) with plans to expand into other parts of Iowa.

I take a lot of pride in my city and my state. I grew up in Des Moines and I am currently residing in Ankeny, a commuter town just north of Des Moines. I went to Grand View University in Des Moines and majored in journalism, mass communication, and photography. I work as a contract photojournalist for various newsgathering agencies, but due to the state of the journalism industry, most of my time is spent working in the activities office of a suburban school district.

Did I leave anything out? Let me know…

“The following instructions will get you started listening to birds (satellites) on FM, which can be done with a simple VHF/UHF FM radio with a whip antenna, without the need of a ham license. "

Listening, not transmitting. Without a license would be a big no no.

Hope this helps.

Hey Kevin,

Our Field Day was great- 1000+ contacts (5A). 6 meters opened the last hour of contesting and I managed to grab 42 contacts. 6M is my favorite band.

I too am a photographer, well, I was a photographer, but I’m getting back into it. (long story). I’m trying to to grab a little journalism work but with an art degree and this economy, its a little tough.

Anywho, I just wanted to say hi. Its nice to see such a great photograph on 73s. I had to give credit where credit was due.

73s!

Hey Kevin,
On the plus side, contests are a good way to get the country count up and also bolster the QSL collection. While there are some contests to be found on the air virtually every weekend, there are maybe just 5 or 6 a year that really plug up the bands. Also, the 30, 17 & 12 meter bands are always contest-free…so there’s always somewhere to seek refuge if you’re not into the contest. Anyway, don’t let it deter you from getting your HF privileges!

K0DSM-7 along the banks of the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines in August 2009. Antennas are two Diamond NR72BNMO (dualband, on trunk lid, drilled) and a Phantom Elite ETRAB8063 (scanning, 806-866 MHz, on roof, drilled).

K0DSM-7 (2004 Impala) as of June 26, 2009. Jotto console, top to bottom: Icom ID-800H (D-STAR), Uniden BCD-996T, Kenwood TM-D710A (APRS), Tripp-Lite power inverter. Still need to make faceplate for power inverter, and I'm waiting on a black 800 MHz Antenex Phantom Elite on the roof for the scanner. Currently using the white version, but the car is black so it sticks out like a sore thumb. Metal post in foreground is for laptop mount that I keep stored in the backseat or the trunk.
